Press Release: ICS Executive Director Frank Garcia Condemns Revocation of Bond Hearings
Frank Garcia, Executive Director of Immigration Counseling Service (ICS), issued the following statement in response to recent federal actions that further erode due process protections for immigrants in detention:
“The U.S. immigration system has long denied due process to those in deportation proceedings. Now, the Trump Administration is deepening this injustice by detaining immigrants without fair bond hearings, a practice that violates constitutional protections and sets a dangerous precedent.
“In immigration court, the burden is unfairly placed on individuals to prove they are not a risk, often without legal help. This reversal of justice leads to prolonged detention, family separation, and devastating human consequences.
“This is not just an immigration issue. It is a constitutional crisis. The Fifth Amendment guarantees due process for all. When the U.S. government erodes protections for immigrants, it weakens protections for everyone. We must uphold a system where liberty is the norm, not the exception. Anything less is a betrayal of our values.”
