In the last week, we have heard horrific stories of cruel anti-immigrant policies in Texas, while the Biden Administration continues to fight for illegal limitations on those seeking asylum. Learn more below, and support our mission to uphold the rights of immigrants everywhere.Cruelty at the Texas BorderThe Biden Administration is challenging the inhumane actions of the Texas government at the border, which include constructing razor-wire barriers in the Rio Grande River and denying migrants water in extreme heat. In one account, a Texas trooper reported that upon encountering a group of 120 migrants on June 25 — including young children and mothers nursing babies — he and another trooper were ordered to “push the people back into the water to go to Mexico.” Frank Garcia, ICS’s Executive Director said, “This is simply inhumane. This is not how we treat human beings anywhere, under any conditions.”Migrant Busing ContinuesThe repercussions of anti-immigrant policies in Texas do not end at the border. Since mid-June, Texas has sent 5 buses of immigrants to Los Angeles. While the city of Los Angeles – with the support of human rights organizations – have mobilized to support new arrivals, these actions underscore the dehumanization of immigrants. “These are political stunts that do nothing to curb migration. The only goal is cruelty, to make migrants suffer,” stated Garcia. Read more about the impact of migrant busing here.Federal Judge Blocks Asylum Restrictions, Biden Administration Fights RulingLast week, a federal judge in California blocked the Biden Administration’s efforts to deny asylum to migrants who arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border without first applying online or seeking protection in a country they passed through. “This ruling confirms what ICS has said for months: these attacks on asylum violate federal law, in addition to being immoral,” according to Garcia. While the ruling itself is a victory, the Biden Administration is appealing the decision, which will leave those seeking safety in danger for weeks or even months. “We need to focus on reforming a broken, overwhelmed immigration and asylum system.
