From Survivor to Citizen: Elena’s Journey
After 15 years of perseverance, Elena* stood proudly with her hand over her heart, reciting the Oath of Allegiance and becoming a U.S. citizen. Her journey to that moment was anything but easy, but it was filled with courage, resilience, and hope.
Elena came to the United States but soon had to seek safety from domestic violence. Alone and unsure of what the future held, she began rebuilding her life from the ground up. She worked long hours, learned English, and found strength in community. Over the years, she became a trusted neighbor, a loving mother, and a fierce advocate for others facing similar struggles.
With the help of Immigration Counseling Service (ICS), Elena applied for immigration relief under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which protects survivors of abuse. It was a long and emotional process, but she never gave up. ICS was there every step of the way by helping Elena secure a visa, obtain a work permit, become a green card holder, and study for citizenship.
With ICS’s help, Elena’s dream finally came true this year. She passed her naturalization interview and was sworn in as a U.S. citizen. Elena’s story is a powerful reminder that behind every immigration case is a human being with dreams, strength, and a future worth fighting for.
